3.3 Use of Possessives

  1.  Normally the possessive is placed after the noun, which is in the definite form:

 Examples:

Jeg må vaske bilen min.
(I must wash my car.)
Søstera mi heter Maren.
(My sister is called Maren.)
Bøkene mine var dyre.
(My books were expensive.)

2.  For emphasis the possessive can be placed before the noun in the indefinite form:

 Examples:

 Det er ikke dine penger!
(That’s not your money!)
De er mine!
(That’s mine!)
Det er min skyld!
(That is my fault!)

This is more common in writing than in speaking especially with abstract ideas or institutions.
