A sentence is the basic unit of communication and expresses meaning independently.  A sentence can be simple or complex, short or long, but it usually has a subject and a verb.

The subject is the person or thing that the sentence describes, and the verb expresses the action in the sentence.  Both the subject and the verb can consist of one word or several.  In normal word order, the subject comes in first position and the verb in second position.
