3.11 Samme, selv, slik, sånn, egen

Other determinatives include words like samme, slik, sånn, egen, and selv.

1.  Samme (the same)  is not declined, but has the same form for all genders and numbers:

Examples:

Jeg kommer hjem på samme tid hver dag. (I come home at the same time every day.)
De to guttene har samme navn.  (Those two boys have the same name.)
Jeg bruker samme sko hver dag.  (I use the same shoes every day.)

2.  Slik and sånn mean the same thing:  thus, like this.  They have different forms according to the gender and number of the noun.

Examples:

Jeg vil ha en slik / sånn kake.  (I’d like a cake like that.)
Har du sett et slikt / sånt dyr før?  (Have you seen an animal like that before?)
Jeg foretrekker slike / sånne bøker. (I prefer books like that / that kind of books.)

3.  Selv means “himself” “herself” “myself”, etc.  It has only one form in this usage.

Examples:

Jeg kan gjøre det selv!  (I can do it myself!)
Han ville ikke komme selv.  (He didn’t want to come himself.)
De skal selge leiligheten selv.  (They’re going to sell the apartment themselves.)

4.  Egen / eget / egne (own) has different forms according to gender and number and usually follows a possessive.

Examples:

Jeg har min egen bil. (I have my own car.)
Bor du i ditt eget hus? (Do you live in your own house?)
Han har sine egne ideer.  (He has his own ideas.)
