Use of -s to show ownership

Ownership can also be expressed by adding a -s to a proper name or a noun.  One can use the genitive -s for definite and indefinite noun owners, and for singular and plural.

The object possessed comes after the genitive, and is in the indefinite form.

The genitive -s is more common in writing than in speech.

NB!  No apostrophe is used before the genitive -s.

 Examples:

Karens bok  = boka til Karen (Karen’s book)
foreldrenes hytte  = hytta til foreldrene (the parents’ cabin)
Norges historie   (the history of Norway)
verdens undergang (the  end of the world)
