Hel / helt / hele is used with singular, countable nouns:

 

Example:

Han spiste ei hel kake.  Han spiste hele kaka = ikke bare ett stykke.
(He ate a whole cake.     He ate the whole cake. = not just one piece.)

Han arbeidet en hel dag . Han arbeidet hele dagen = ikke bare en del av dagen, men fra morgen til kveld.
(He worked a whole day.  He worked the whole day (all day). = not just part of the day, but from morning to evening.)

Han spiste et helt brød.  Han spiste hele brødet = ikke bare en del av brødet.
(He ate a whole (loaf of) bread.  He ate the whole (loaf of) bread. = not just part of the loaf.)

NB!  No definite article before “hele”:  hele dagen = the whole day
